Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Try to imagine living in a fast-moving kaleidoscope, where images, sounds, and thoughts are constantly changing. You feel really bored, yet helpless to keep your mind on what you are supposed to be doing. Unimportant sights and sounds are constantly grabbing your attention, and your mind drives you from one thought or activity to the next without stopping to think about it. For many people this is what it is like to have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). In my opinion ADD and ADHD are major disorders that need to be paid attention to not only in the classroom but in the workplace too.
What is it like for those with ADD or ADHD in school or in the workplace? Kids in grade school often have a very rough time. Impulsively blurting out questions and answers with out permission, or jumping out of their desk to go sharpen a pencil 5 times in one morning, are typical behaviors of kids with ADD or ADHD in grade school. A high school student might find classes that require a lot of attentiveness such as Algebra and or Biology very troubling. They might find school extremely boring and therefore put little effort into it, resulting in low grade

Some adults that were strongly affected by these disorders as children find that with age it gets better, or better managed. The result is the brain not being able to focus on one thing for a very long time unless interest levels are extremely high. Once you stop taking them then the problem persists. Others, over time learn ways of dealing with the symptoms better. Although companies need to recognize these disorders and the problems that they cause, they don"tmt and probably never will. Sometimes parents find themselves spanking, ridiculing, or screaming at the child, even though they know that they shouldn"tmt and it probably won"tmt do any good any way. Another characteristic that is exhibited by both ADD and ADHD is that of Impulsively. All teachers in grade school should be well aware of the characteristics of kids with these disorders. People who are inattentive have a hard time keeping their mind focused on one thing and often get bored with a task after a short period of time. If you cannot perform well, then there is somebody else waiting in line to do your job better than you. Parenting a child that has an endless flow of energy, leaves messes, throws fits, and doesn"tmt follow instructions is extremely frustrating and nerve-racking. Adults that suffer from these disorders as well need to understand what the disorder is all about and learn ways of coping with it. They are something that you acquire at birth. I must say that my impulsiveness in grade school got me sent to the principals office more than any one in that school. These are just some of the problems faced by those that suffer from ADD or ADHD.
