Winged Victory - The Original Female Icon
The Winged Victory: The Original Female Icon In many regions of the Mediterranean world during first century B.C., art began to take on a new design. Before the coming of the Romans and the conquests of Alexander the Great, the art of the ancient Greeks was taken to a whole new level. The often used classical ideas which always consisted of rationality, order and harmony was abandoned for a more dramatic, intense, human creation. Artists and sculptors of this time period, also called the Hellenistic Era, established that although they could sculpt gods and heroes, they also could create your normal every day human too. The way a viewer of Greek art could tell whether it was classical or Hellenistic was if it displayed emotion/motion or not. The most famous and considered the finest Hellenistic Greek sculpture, Nike of Samothrace, represents the Greek passion for beauty, strength and power. I instantly became attracted to this very beautiful piece of artwork, because of it's sense of p
I am glad that another head was not created or rebuilt because the imagination is better left to determine that it could've been anyone. There are trait's that the sculpture has that I feel make it very symbolic. Page 2 Nike was created by a Rhodian sculptor between 220 and 190 B. I just happen to be the biggest Nike (corporation) fan and found this extremely interesting. I think that the Greeks wanted to show that women could conquer with their own strength and needed no one. In fact, Nike has been called a Hellenistic masterpiece because of this certain feeling of movement. Nike was discovered on the Aegean island of Samothrace in 1863 and immediately sent to the Louvre Museum in Paris, where it is displayed on the landing of the Daru Staircase. Nike's depiction of being "strong and heavy, yet agile and graceful" symbolizes that no matter what is thrown at a woman or how much burden she endures, she is victorious over all. I can tell by the way the draperies are intensely wrapped around her body that the artist wanted the viewer to feel her struggle against the sea. The idea behind the meanings of these particular names went into the development of the actual Nike Corporation adopting VICTORY as it's goddess. I feel that the headless, armless, eight foot tall figure of Nike symbolizes that beauty and strength can be faceless and still be honored. I really would have liked to have seen the original as she is depicted writing a victory on a shield. The Nike of Samothrace or The Winged Victory is the goddess of victory in Greek Mythology.
