In this essay I will be looking at minority groups, specifically focusing on racial minorities, religious minorities and linguistic minorities, which I will look at in detail. I will also look at whether the special protection which they receive as a result of belonging to a minority group is beneficial, and addressing any issues and problems which may arise from this protection.

The need for protecting the right of minorities is a relatively new phenomenon, as it had been considered until only recently, that such minority protection could be dealt with through the general regime of human rights.

In recent years, minority issues have become a regular feature on the international agenda. The defining of the term ‘minority’ has proved problematic. The simplest definition is: a group that makes up less than 50% of the population. However there has been debate over what constitutes a minority.

’ There are two ways in which countries adopt in respect to the treatment of minorities. This can be seen in the case of Regents of the University of California, Petitioner v. It has become critical that the needs of minorities are protected. Linguistic diversity presents a challenge to the development of multicultural policies, due to the numerous areas that it effects; public policy, including education, media, new information technologies, and the labour market to some extent.

Action must be taken to ensure that minority groups are treated fairly, specifically in the social and economic field, but it is important that all areas are addressed, to maintain equal opportunities for everyone. The list of the main minority languages in Europe include; Welsh, Scotch, Irish, Basque, Breton, Catalan, Cornish, Corsican, Faroese, Frisian, Galician, Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Occitan, Romanish, Romany, Sorbian, and Sardinian. There will always be this conflict in different states and it is unlikely that all problems can be eradicated as easily as human rights law has tried to do.

Programs devised to prevent racial discrimination, or in fact discrimination of any minority group, may fulfil its duties, a positive step for ethnic minorities, but in doing so may cause negative repercussions for other majority or minority groups. The problem was a special committee interviewed applicants of ethnic minorities, the normal entry requirement did not need to be satisfied, and the top applicants who had been reviewed by the special committee would then be admitted to the medical school. However there is still the question as to whether the needs of minorities have been adequately met.
