American violence
Violence plays a huge part in American society. In "Videotape" by Don DeLillo, it displays part of the sick and cruel world our parents brought us in to. From movies that we watch to video games that we play, we cannot escape violence. No matter what the consequences are to obtain a rush, America is a leech for thrills. "Videotape" is a story about reality. A twelve year old girl is learning how to operate a camera, while driving with her parents in the family car. The girl is shooting the camera aimlessly and innocent, when the lens randomly falls on a stranger in a "medium Dodge." The lens shows "a man in his forties wearing a pale shirt open at the throat." The man is bald up the middle of his head, and seems like a nice guy. The footage is suspenseful and rare. It seems as though something out of the ordinary is going to happen. The twelve year old girl is filming the friendly forty year old man, when bam! The man is shot in the head. This is reality, and the twelve year old
Sometimes unexpectedly, violence is caught on tape. From TV shows, such as MTV's Jackass, where a bunch of guys do random, stupid, and violent stunts which can severely injure themselves just to make people laugh. Americans seem to enjoy the price of pain and love to watch people hurt each other. girl is flabbergasted filming with a front row seat to witness this brutal murder. Everyone stops and watches two guys on skates slug it out on ice. This is so common that it has become part of the game. Sports also play a major role in people perceiving violence as entertainment. King was pulled over for speeding and was wrongfully accused of being high. Younger crowds are being affected in negative ways and sooner or later it is going to be normal for people to commit violent acts. In conclusion people in America have a huge interest in violence. Violence in sports travels far beyond football and hockey. At this young age children are going to start thinking that it is just a game, mimicking what they see which can result in a catastrophe. When is it going to be enough, so that everyone faces a reality check?. Like "Videotape" this brings us to reality and the corrupt world we live in. In boxing, two people engage in hand to hand combat until one is knocked out, similar to wrestling where two people roll around until one of them pins the other.
