The most important aspect of any culture is the people. Great nations like the United States were establish through the understanding that people are the most valuable resource of a nation, and it is the responsibility of the leaders to ensure that the people are respected. The central focus of a good leader should always be to maintain the well being of the people - especially during time of war. This understanding breeds patriotism and heroes. A prime example of good leadership is exemplified in Chief Crazy Horse of the Sioux Tribe during the 19th century when the migrating European and American settlers were expanding westward. Chief Crazy Horse recognized that the settlers had no respect for his land, beliefs or his people. McGillycuddy a former surgeon of the 2nd U. "In advancing upon an enemy, none of his warriors were allowed to pass him" ("Crazy Horse Quotes"). As the explorers and settlers migrated west they consumed the resources that nature provided, which the Indians relied on to survive, and they infringed upon the Indians habitat to freely pursue their resources. Conflicts between Indian tribes did not pose a threat to the Indian culture; internal conflicts were actually a part of the culture. Crazy Horse was also a generous man. An example of this situation in today's world is Iraq and the leadership of Saddam Hussein. Crazy Horse was a warrior who fought out of respect for his people's history and way of life. In today's world we can see that many of the democratic nations depend on input from the people. ) "It was a point of honor with him never to keep anything for himself, excepting weapons of war" ("Crazy Horse Quotes"). However, many countries still rely on dictatorship principals. His ability to recognize the importance of their heritage and the comfort of their ancient ways proved that he knew what was most important to the people. As a result of the respect Crazy Horse displayed for his people, he in turn was greatly respected by his people. A critical part of leadership is the ability to recognize forces that are most intrinsically affecting the well being of the people - both at the individual level and the cultural level.
