I am Ready to be on My Own
I am done waiting for my knight in shining armor, and now I am ready to be my own. I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life after High School, or if I could do anything at all. Education is an important factor in the choices of my future, and how I will arrive there. The people and events in my life have shaped my goals and aspirations. Upon meeting me in person many people assume that I have ethnic traits associated with my personality, because of my ethnicity. Being first generation Mexican American has made it difficult to fully integrate with the generalized community in my area, during my elementary school years. Though I believe that my social difficulties have greatly helped me create a cosmopolitan persona. My single parent upbringing has also encouraged me to attain a better living situation. Adversities to my education, such as low income and relocation, have not deterred me from aspiring to a better education. When I was younger I did not have t . . .
” I realized at that point, that if I wanted to succeed I would have to work twice as hard. During this time I attended a local community college. During my Junior year I believe that I grew levels of responsibility and maturity. Not till I entered Junior High School that I was sparked with the urge to attend at post-secondary education. I asked the course professor why I had been dismissed, although other students whom also did not complete the required reading material were allowed to enroll, his answer “… your track record of irresponsibility…” This I could not contest, though I this school year I will change his expectations about my achievement. It is for my self that I seek to gain an elevated standard of education. Entering High School I was given the opportunity, by the AVID program, to fulfill my potential as a student, in turn improving my organization and study skills, much of what I have accomplished I attribute to the AVID program’s assistance. I did not complete the reading, that being my dismissal of the course. The professor allowed student enrollment if they had completed required reading and an examination. Nearing the end of my Junior year I was faced with many financial struggles, I acquired employment and moved away from home. Upon enrolling in a community college course, I did not have the financial resources to purchase the required reading material. The events and people in my life are not the reason for my quest of higher education. I believe that my years in High School have given me the ability to grow as a student, but most of as a person. The course professor said to me “ Have you bought the book?” I felt awkward just then saying only “No, I can’t afford it.
