Napster
Is downloading songs off of Napster morally acceptable? My first inclination is to say, no, that downloading an entire song from the Internet is stealing. The artist who recorded the song would actually think so, along with the record label company. It seems quite simple that if a person produces a product then that person is entitled to the profit made by selling that product. That individuals' effort, time, and money, to name a few, were put into making the product. So yes, to have consumers download the product, in this case a song, for free does in the fact constitute stealing.
However, do not radio stations play an artist's songs repeatedly throughout the day? Cannot an individual record a song from the radio in a manner consistent to that of, "recording the song from an internet site? To this extent, I would say that it is in fact the same thing. going to the theater as opposed to waiting for a video release and that same society, in fact, ends up going to the theater and also buying the movie upon its release. If anything, I'd say that producers and movie studios have in fact made more money from the release of videos, as the majority of people in today's society of instant gratification, i. Stealing is, to take (the property of another) without right or permission. from getting to know the artist whether it be from radio or an internet site, where as a song can be recorded through either medium. This is without a doubt, what is being done by downloading songs off of the Internet. This of course has not been the case. This topic brings to mind the concerns of the entertainment industry, a "few" years back that movie videos for the home would have an effect on the actual movie release, in that people wouldn't go to the movie, because they would simply wait for it to come out on video. It might require more time and effort to record a song off the radio than it does by simply clicking a few buttons with a mouse on the computer; however it is in fact the same scenario. In conclusion my final analysis is that the music industry should take heed of the past influence from the movie industry and come to the realization that the more air play a song gets means the more exposure the artist gets and that society would buy the c.
