Gender Socialization

             Mothers and Fathers are responsible for the initial gender socialization of their children. This paper will explore why children approximately infancy through adolescence, with an emphasis in the adolescence group fit the traditional gender script as per what their parents say is right for little boys, and what is right for little girls, and also how the media plays a role in this.              When your friend tells you that she is pregnant for the first time, what are the typical person's first reactions? In my own experience, the first things I would say is "I wonder if it's a boy or a girl?" and if so the nursery would have to be painted and decorated in accordance to either pink or blue. In many cases even before the child is born, if the doctor tells the parents the sex of the baby the mother tends to tell all her friends and have a baby shower, collecting items such as clothes, blankets, and items would help the baby and the mother make infancy easier for both. These items are usually in accordance to either pink or blue, or pastel colors for girls and solid hard colors such as red and blue for boys. As far as clothes are concerned, a girl is traditionally dressed in flowers and frills, and boys in dark colors with sports figures or equipment plastered on the front of it. When the child gets older, they are traditionally given toys that represent their gender according to society, such as boys would receive toy trucks, and sports equipment, and girls on the other hand would be given tea sets and easy bake ovens to play house with.
