Analysis- Katherine
This passage is located in Katherine's closing monologue. She speaks it to Bianca and the widow in regards to obeying one's husband. The point Katherine brings in this passage is that women are illogical and ungrateful. She begins by expressing her shame that women are so simple. She says that they argue when their husbands try to do good things for them. She claims women try to be aggressive and argumentative when in fact they should be submissive and obedient to her husband. She goes on to elaborate that women's bodies are weak and unable to do hard work. Not only that, but it would be appropriate that a women's outer appearance should reflect their inner personality. In other words, their demeanor should be as soft and as fair as their bodies. Of course, the above interpretation only applies when the monologue is given in a serious manner. However, if it were delivered with sarcasm the same interpretation would not apply. It would seem that if this monologue were delivered with sarcasm, that would not only change the meaning of the monologue, but in fact, the ending of the play itself. We see that if the monologue is delivered in a serious way, the audience can assume that Katherine has been "tamed." Even if she still believ
This would, of course, torment Katherine. However, she may also be alluding to the fact that some women are 'bound' to their husbands because of the fact they became pregnant by them. This passage could be read in the sense that when a woman fights with her husband, it is against her nature and this creates an inner conflict. " Katherine could be referring here that it is not just a matter of external conflict, but also of internal conflict. " This definition certainly fits in if you read Katherine's monologue in a serious fashion. Here, Katharine could be lamenting that women 'sacrifice' their ability to war with their husbands in instances where society feels they should kneel for peace. However, a second definition is given for the word 'condition. To be so ungrateful and so unable to understand how well they live by their husbands' good graces, it would indeed make women appear simple. I selected this passage because of its ambiguity. In addition to the above two definitions for 'bound,' a third definition also merits mention. The meaning of the verse is clear, women propose war when they should be begging for peace. This could refer to any number of elements. es in her mind otherwise, her manner is still controlled now. " This fits in perfectly if she were speaking the monologue seriously.
