Death of a Salesman

In, "Death of a salesman," written by Arthur, the play is considered a tragedy, according to the guidelines set fourth by the essays, " Aristole on Tragedy" and " Tragedy and the common man." In order for a story to be considered a tragedy, it must have certain characteristics, such as; tragic flaw, it must arouse pity and fear through an alteration in the status of the central character, and that the main character is attempting to gain his "rightful" position in his society. All three of these characteristics are in "Death of a Salesman," which is why I believe it is a tragedy.

le states, "A tragic flaw is the characters error which causes his downfall or subjects him to retribution". You know it's bad when a person lie's too themselves, and soon starts to believe the lie. Some may say that Willy is not a man of nobility which makes it not a tragedy, but since Kings and queens are rare now of days, that doesn't make it critrea to which whether or not it is a tragedy. Death of a salesman is considered a tragedy based upon the characteristics expressed in the essays. He does this because in the past he had all these great expectations, but in the present, they are non-existent. The problems with his family and at work all make the viewer fell bad for him. He's had no success, but he convinces himself that he is a successful businessman, but in reality, he's not. He is trying to make his life better, and he thinks by becoming a successful businessman, his life will become better. He is trying to make his life as good as he can, but can anyone blame him, don't we all try to do so. Throughout the play, Willy is just trying to become a successful businessman, but comes up short. You can't help but fell some sort of pity for Willy. Willy Loman, the main character in "Death of a Salesman" has a tragic flaw: he lives in the past. He is constantly thinking in his head that things are as they were in the past, but is reluctant to admit that all his expectations failed him. He is miserable, so he looks in the past when all of his dreams were possible.
