Artistic Experience

             On Good Friday my family and I went to see "The Last Three Days", a play about the life of Jesus Christ as narrated by his disciples just after the Crucifixion. The First Assembly of God Church was presenting it. I had never been in this church before so I didn't know what to expect, but as we entered, the members greeted us warmly. The reception made us feel very welcome.
             We were directed to our seats in the auditorium. The stage had no curtain so all of the settings to be used throughout the play were in view. At the front of the stage was a large orchestra pit where the musicians were tuning their instruments. As we took our seats, there was a somber mood in the air. Instead of the usual light-hearted conversation one would expect to hear, people were talking in more serious tones.
             As the lights went down and the orchestra played a mournful hymn, Jesus walked to the stage down the center aisle. He struggled with a large wooden cross on his back while being whipped by soldiers. The first part of the play went on to portray the Crucifixion. Then, as Jesus lay in the tomb, his disciples narrated various events in Jesus' life as characters acted them out.
             Even though I have read the story of the Crucifixion many times, I was still overwhelmed with the sense of tragedy of this terrible event. I glanced at a man seated near me and he was crying. Others nearby were crying also. I realized that this play was having a powerful effect on everyone.
             As the play ended, I was brought back to reality. I recognized what a tremendous job the actors had done for I felt as if I had been part of the story myself.
             We were fortunate enough to express our appreciation to the actors personally because they were waiting at the exit to greet the audience.
