What do you Leanrn About Scouts reationship in the novel?
What do you learn about Scouts relationships in the first three chapters of the novel?· structure your work in 4 main paragraphs, each focusing on Scout's relationship with the characters· use plenty of quotations in each paragraph to support your points· where relevant use terms such as first person narrator, irony, satire and imagery· conclude by summing up what qualities Scout has.Lee establishes Scout as the first person narrator and in this way Scout is the subject of portrayal. In the first three chapters Lee introduces the reader to other characters such as Atticus Scouts father, Jem her brother, Miss Caroline Fisher her teacher and Calpurnia the family cook. Atticus is a very affectionate father who tries to the best for Scout, as she has no mother to influence her. Lee creates Atticus into a wise character. He has a lot of respect for the black and others that the town dislike. Atticus has time for his family although he is conscientious in his job. He has taught Scout many a skill, for example how to read. Although Scout does not acknowledge this, "He hasn't taught me anything, Miss Caroline"(Pg 19 line 6). At the end of the chapter Atticus teaches Scout two very important less
Calpurnia is the black cook for the Finch household. Scout and Jem both respect their father. Miss Fisher has no authority over the children. Scout stands up and explains he is a 'Cunningham. Jem does like to be seen as a coward. In the summer each year they play with Dill and get up to much mischief usually involving the Radley house, "lets try make him come out"(Pg 14 line 22). Miss Fisher asks Scout not to let her father teach him, she will undo the damage, "your father does not know how to teach"(pg 19 line 24). She has authority over the children. Jem and Scout get along reasonably well. This is shown when Walter comes home for lunch and pours what Scout thinks is an excessive amount of syrup, she remarks and Calpurnia calls her to the kitchen, "don't matter who they are, anybody set foot in this house's yo' compa'ny"(pg 27 line 22). ' Miss Fisher does not understand Scouts explanation so she explains what the 'Cunningham's,' " the 'Cunningham's never took anything they can't pay back. The maternal influence in the household is Calpurnia; Jem needs this as he misses his mother due to her dying when he was young. This is ironic because her father is a lawyer. This is also ironic as Scout is teaching the teacher whereas the teacher should be teaching Scout.
