The story is about a retarded man named Charlie, who goes to special night classes. Because he is not very smart like other people, he cannot think like ordinary people. That‘s why some people don‘t treat him with respect, and therefore sometimes make fun of him. Charlie doesn‘t just go to classes, but he also works in a box factory. He just sweep the dirt of the floor, they don‘t think he is smart enough to do anything else. But one day some doctors at his class offer him a surgery that could make him smarter. Charlie wants to get smarter, but the doctors also say that the surgery could have certain concequenses. But Charlie is not smart enough to understand the concequenses, he just want to be smarter so he accepts the offer. When he is to take some tests, like the maze, he beats the mouse, he gets very happy and knows that he is getting smarter. The change makes his friends at work frightened, because they normally make fun of him and he just laughs along. Now that he answers back at them they get scared. Later on he gets fired, almost everyone at work have signed a paper where is says that they want Charlie fired, and the doctors also said that he was better of so he could concentrate more on the eksperiment. At that time he was not very happy because he is now very smart, because people now treat him differently. He also now begins to have some feelings for Miss Kinnian; she also gets a bit scared of him. She has always known him not to have any feelings for her or other women. At the end of the story he finds out that the surgery causes death, because the mouse Algernon dies it also had the same surgery as Charlie. So he moves to another city, so that the people he knows won‘t treat him like a patient.
