Machines Are Somebody
“Rise and shine,” Mom announces through the bedroom door, “Your alarm should have gone off by now. Did you set it?” I get up and check it only to find that the wake to music feature is set like always and it is the alarm that has decided not wake me up just to make me late again. The coffee maker chirps sweetly telling me its morning brew is ready and waiting for me. I am thankful I do not have to fight with it to get my cup of java that must accompany me on my drive to class. I do not think I could get moving in the morning without the reliable service of hot, fresh brewed coffee to take with me in the morning. . . .
It is the most user friendly and has never let me down. A girl sits down at the computer station next to me and asks, “Do you like that computer better than this one for any special reason?” I answer her automatically “We are friends, it is the best one in here. We pull in and park and I thank Old Blue, once again, for chauffeuring me there safely even though I know I was the one driving. to warm up my Chevrolet, “Old Blue,” he knows I am running late by his loud grumbling at me from under his hood as we get started. ” This puts my thoughts in action, I know that inanimate machines can perform logical operations because human beings built them to do so. As I’m walking into the classroom, I notice that my favorite personal computer is already turned on, silently waiting patiently for me to start my work at the keyboard. But, I really feel that there is characteristics built into machines by their creators, inventors and builders that give them life and attract us to them. Even though a brand name of a certain machine is all built the same I can identify a quirk in one machine that I dislike and I will buy another because it behaves to my liking. ” She smiles at me and remarks, “I feel the same about my computer at home, but stubbornness is what I get from the computers here at school. I converse with Old Blue, politely reminding him what a pleasure it is to be able to rely on such a dependable running car for so long and assure him his rewards will be a full tank of gas and a run through the car wash later today for getting me to class on time. I’m relaxed by the smooth, happy humming I hear now from the car as we cruise down the road.
