Wisdom versus Knowledge
If a person has been taught much knowledge does this make him wiser? What if the question were asked reversed. If a person is considered to be wise, is this because he has been taught a lot of knowledge? If the former question was to be answered without the latter being asked it might make more sense. However, if thought out thoroughly, to be wise may not necessarly mean to have been taught a lot of knowledge. Wisdom doesn't come straight from knowledge, nor does knowledge come from wisdom. An iota of information that one feels has some sort of importance or value, something that can be carried on through life is considered wisdom. But information with non of this can be considered straight knowledge. In Inge Bell's essay she emphasizes the importance of wisdom versus knowledge and why wisdom needs to be stressed more than knowledge. In today's education system however, this concept of wisdom being a better value and a more important value doesn't seem to matter. The education system today mainly consists of the teachers just teaching and the students just learning. Basically, the all knowing teacher fills the facts into the blank minded student, than the student in one form or another regurgit
Students need to take a stronger stand in their education and absorb both wisdom and knowledge from what they are being taught. It attempts to control thinking and action± (103). Wisdom and knowledge can be very similar to each other or very different from each other, depending on the individual. If the environment of the classrooms changed, than students would be more eager to gain both knowledge and wisdom. Students going through an education system where wisdom is emphasized more than knowledge would definitely be in better shape to face the creal world' rather than those who are coming out with just knowledge. This type of narration only leads the student to memorize, record, and than regurgitate the information back into the next exam, two weeks from when they were taught the information. Yet, there is supposedly a connection between knowledge and wisdom that is suppose to be made through all the information that is thrown at the student. Students don't have any creative power and don't need any creative power in an environment where everything in this ready-to-wear approach serves to prevent thinking± (102). According to Paulo Freire, the education system today can be considered a cbanking' concept. They would see who they are and what the world is. Students full of wisdom would be more subjective to an issue being addressed to them, because they have been taught to see and think for themselves. The teacher is only there to accomplish one thing, their task is to fill± the students with the contents of his narration± (99). It's just that in most cases this connection is seldom made because neither the teacher nor the student wants to take the time to. If the environment was a comfort zone for the student, open to discussion, and fun without the pressures of just spitting it back out, than any student would be able to gain more wisdom than knowledge. Having wisdom involves the ability to keep your emotional and mental balance in life± (112).
