Smart Eating

             We all indulge in the activity of eating food because it is a necessity of life, but whether we make the decision to eat healthy or unhealthy foods depends on personal choice and discipline. Every day we all make choices consciously or unconsciously about the foods we ingest into our bodies. Smart eaters will attempt to eat nutritious foods mostly, while nonchalant eaters are not very selective about the foods they eat. The book Smart Eating was published in 1996 tells readers how to make smart eating decisions.
             Covert Bailey and Ronda Gates introduce the concept of target eating principles, which they compare to archery. "To illustrate their approach they created a smart eating food target with foods arranged according to their fat content. Most of the time people should aim to eat nutritious foods found in the bull's eye, although occasionally one may shoot a stray arrow into some high-fat foods found farther away from the center. Having the ability to choose foods that contain more good substances than bad substances is critical to developing good eating habits" (Bailey and Gates 8).
             Smart Eating offers instructions for men, women, athletes, healthy people, and people with weight problems or illnesses. Because the instructions are fundamentals for eating right, anyone can follow this simple guide without having any worries. There are many books that attempt to address dieting and exercise while there are fewer books addressing healthy eating. One possible reason for this trend is that most authors are
             targeting vulnerable over weight people. Many of those books that claim to address dieting are meant only for a specific cross-section of society, - young healthy people – who do not have any diseases.
