A Different World

            The street was semi-empty and a few cars passed by around 1 pm on Saturdays. But later on that day it got busier and a lot more open.Fort Green is full of excitement and music and lots of culture. It was February and there were trees with full sprouted green leaves, leaves that were still intact onto the barks, and had not fallen off. It felt safe. People seemed safe like the leaves on the bark of the tree. Despite the chilly air, people would be wondering about as if it was summer, not even worried if it might be cold.Its so alive, music on the streets and across the way people are exchanging salutations. It seemed that everyone knows each other, or if they don't they smile and say "afternoon" or " hi". But it was very tranquil and very noisy at the same time. The only thing missing were the teenagers of this community. There were many young adult mothers strolling somewhat noisy baby carriages, and that was the only noise you would hear, rubber wheels riding along the smooth cemented sidewalk.
             Its Saturday night, maybe they went on a date. But all of them. i don't think so. Where was the music of hip-hop culture coming from? Was it the adults playing it? There weren't kids either in Ft. Green park. A few kids were playing basketball, about seven to ten little African-American children struggling to shoot some hoops, but no teenagers. Most kids we saw were accompanied by adults and must have been around 5 years old.
             Come to think about it, most adults who roomed the streets in Ft. Green were around the ages of 20 to 30 years old. These are young adults, living in an old neighborhood. Irony plays a cool role in Ft. green. There weren't any sights of the elderly population. But nevertheless, teenagers where no where in sight. Maybe the old saturated the young and remained young themselves.
