A separate peace

In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles portrays a story during 1940s when two friends at a private school in rural New Hampshire relate their reactions to the world around them. Finny, one of the protagonists in the story was an athletic guy who was honest, handsome, self- confident, disarming, extremely likable, and the best athletic guy in the school. Finny had many characteristics in the story and some of his traits were that he had a talent for engaging others with his spontaneity. But what made Finny special also was his way of avoiding to get in trouble with his clever excuses to the teachers and the headmaster. Lastly another trait was that he never strives to defeat a person. Finny developed many strong characteristics throughout the novel in which this round, dynamic character changes over the course of the story. One of Finny's traits was that he has a talent for engaging others with his spontaneity. At the beginning of the story, he dared his friends Gene, Leper, Chet, and the others to jump off the tree and into the shallow river. Everyone thought the idea was crazy and dangerous but he did it deliberately. This idea made him stand out more as a leader who takes in stride. Another event that showed spontan

Another occurrence happened when Finny wore this peculiar pink shirt for the emblem of the bombings in Central Europe and during the tea ceremony Mrs. First thing that occurred was when Finny and Gene were late for their dinner. "(Page 27) This quote that Finny said meant that even though we live in this rural area we could still support for our country in the war. Nothing as he was growing up at home, nothing at Devon, nothing even about the war had broken his harmonious and natural unity" (pg. Gene was carrying the medicine ball and was obviously tired running from the river to the fields. So this is the reason why at the beginning of the story he says that there is no such war going on. Just as he dislikes games with winners and losers, so in life he always thinks the best of people, counts no one as his enemy, and assumes that the world is a fundamentally friendly place. 115) He thought the war was just bogus and was not taking place. His second trait was that he had a way of avoiding getting into trouble with his sweet clever talk, almost as if he was Christ. All around he is such a great human that certain people begin to hate him. Phineas has a very strong character, and these attributes are present throughout the novel. Prud'homme and no punishment was given. Finny said, "I wore this, you see, because it goes with the shirt and it all ties in together; I didn't mean that to be a pun, I don't think they're very funny, especially in polite company. Patch Witters was astonished that Finny had used the Devon school tie as his belt.
