A separate peace

In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles portrays a story during 1940s when two friends at a private school in rural New Hampshire relate their reactions to the world around them. Finny, one of the protagonists in the story was an athletic guy who was honest, handsome, self- confident, disarming, extremely likable, and the best athletic guy in the school. Finny had many characteristics in the story and some of his traits were that he had a talent for engaging others with his spontaneity. But what made Finny special also was his way of avoiding to get in trouble with his clever excuses to the teachers and the headmaster. Lastly another trait was that he never strives to defeat a person. Finny developed many strong characteristics throughout the novel in which this round, dynamic character changes over the course of the story.
One of Finny's traits was that he has a talent for engaging others with his spontaneity. At the beginning of the story, he dared his friends Gene, Leper, Chet, and the others to jump off the tree and into the shallow river. Everyone thought the idea was crazy and dangerous but he did it deliberately. This idea made him stand out more as a leader who takes in stride. Another event that showed spontaneity was that when he created the game "blitzball." Of course the game was derived from the battle of Blitzkrieg in Germany where the Nazi's used "speed tactics" take over France in 1939. He made up those rules just deliberately on the spot while they were playing the game and didn't actually know what he was doing. Gene was carrying the medicine ball and was obviously tired running from the river to the fields. Lastly, when Gene came back from visiting Leper in Vermont, Finny purposely organized a snowball fight group where he wanted Gene to join them and then have Finny turn himself against others like a free for all. This was to show the spontaneity side of Finny.
