Directing A Midsummer Night's Dream

I would have big pillars standing around the edge of a stage, to represent both Athens and the Duke's palace. Two large thrones could sit towards the back of the stage, where Theseus and Hippolyta could sit. Everyone else would stand, which would give a different sense of levels. I would have deep red curtains hanging loosely about the stage, tied with gold braids to show wealth and status. When the play is set in the town square, I would have extras come on and bustle about in the background, but they wouldn't be lit up, only slightly. I would spotlight the mechanical's who would be sitting, or standing on the steps at the front of the stage. I think this would involve the audience more, and show, how compared to Theseus and his throne, they are sitting on the pavement, so there is a nice contrast. I would keep the pillars there, for both practicality and the fact that they represent Athens still. For the scenes with the lover in the woods, I would have the stage lit up in greens and leaves or branches hung of the pillars, I would also have the fairies, who are on the higher tier, to droop streams of flowers, or garlands over the stage. Leaves could also be scattered all over the stage floor, as long as there was time to sweep them back up again before another scene change.
             The fairy world would be very colourful, with lots of bright, gentle materials flowing and garlands of flowers around the stage. The fairies would all sit gracefully on little seats made of petals, or lean on huge flower stems. I want to make their world very out of proportion, to show that I see the fairies as being tiny, almost invisible. When they were to cross over to the human world, they would climb down the ladder, and sit and wait, or creep around the audience, making it more fun and enjoyable for those watching.
             The play tend to show the audience a different spin on simple ideas such as Love. In the story, Love ...
