As the discovery of the "New World" progressed, large numbers of white men and women migrated to the North American continent, and profoundly altered Native American's lives culturally and economically. Wherever they lived Indians discovered that conquest strained traditional ways of life. Mostly all Native American groups were forced to devise new ways to survive in physical and social atmospheres that eventually eroded tradition One of the leading pioneers for exploration of the "New World" was the British. As they migrated onto the North American continent, the British brought along with them an ethnocentric attitude. Which meant from the beginning they thought of the Native Americans as lesser people and that their culture, and way of conducting their economy was wrong. Competition among the European nations and among the Indian tribes for the fur trade was a major factor in many of the intertribal conflicts and colonial war. In ad-dition, the Natives adapted the horse for use in battle. " But the animal that most profoundly affected the Native Americans was the horse, and early Spanish explorers are accredited with introducing it to the Indians. Another country that changed the Native American way of life drastically was the Span-ish. Although, some changes were for the better, like the introduction of horses, and more advanced technology, most were negatively lasting changes and their repercussions can still be felt today. In exchange for their goods, the Indians received European products such as iron tools and utensils, and decorative cloths and beads. The Indians also re-ceived firearms and liquor, both of which had an enormous impact on the Indians way of life. As the Spanish migrated to the North America they brought with them numerous plants and animals from the Old World. At first, the sight of this large, powerful animal terrified the Indians. Over the course of many years the impact on the Indians as a result of the fur trade came about in various ways. All the colonial powers, especially the British, were involved in the mass commercial exploitation of animal skin. First, as skilled hunters the Indians were sought after as trading partners and were exposed to white culture. In addition to that, the British also brought with them disease. The effects that these different groups had on the Native Americans drastically changed the way they lived their lives.
