Ernest Hemingway’s own life and character are indeed as fascinating as any in his stories. One of Hemingway’s greatest virtues as a writer was his self-discipline. Ernest would sit and look for hours over the roof tops of Paris and think to himself that he was going to write something soon, and all he had to do was think of one true sentence and he would have it (Donaldson 185-190). While he was recovering from the Italian front incident, Hemingway picked 227 metal fragments out of his right leg. Thus proving that social realism was the plot of his book. Harry Morgan was being forced to work as a guide for rich, ignorant tourists. He was in his forties at the time, and it was a very bad time, but he took advantage of it and used what he knew in his writing (Nagel 100-109). For example; For Whom the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms are two of his works that are based on war (Donaldson 175-180). So, when times got hard, he would run liquor on the Caribbean. Under the pressures of corrupt and immoral local officials, he moved beyond the law into a series of dangerous and illegal voyages that eventually lead to his death.
