Depression knows no age or gender boundaries and has been around as long as the human race. To this day, depression may still be the least accurately diagnosed disease existing. It is thought that fifty percent of the population goes untreated because they either do not realize they are depressed or a doctor fails to diagnose this depression. The form of this disease varies from one individual to the next. While some people lack the energy to get out of bed, others are full of nervous energy and suffer from sleepless nights. There many causes that brings about several viable avenues of treatment. Antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Luvox are now among the most prescribed drugs in America. All antidepressants work by slowing the removal of certain chemicals from the brain. However, tremendous controversy exists between the safeties versus the benefits of these drugs. Sydney Walker III, a neurologist, psychiatrist and author of A Dose of Sanity, says that psychiatric labels have "led to the unnecessary drugging of millions of Americans who could be diagnosed, treated, and cured without the use of toxic and potentially lethal medications" (Invention, pp. Richard Balon, professor of psychiatry at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, “many practitioners don't have the time to inform patients about all of the possible medication side effects. Out of those reports there are about 2500 deaths with the large majority of them linked to suicide or violence” (Bird, pp. Blake Ann Tracy states that: “The latest figures show Prozac has about 44,000 adverse reports filed with the FDA. ” Like all drugs on the market, some people have an unpleasant reaction to antidepressants, while side effects in others are just mild. Some people have found relief simply by addressing underlying nutrient deficiencies. However, prescription antidepressants are not the only options for dealing with depression.
