Odyssey :Telemachus

In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, Telemachus plays a boy in desperate search

of his father. He faces the fact that his mother must re-marry another man . This disturbs

Telemachus since he feels none of the suitors are worthy of his mother’s love. This

re-marriage both provokes and enrages him. It instills a more mature Telemachus with a

more conscientious demeanor. This helps Telechamus to become a more determined

individual.. Furthermore , these transformations make Telechamus a more dynamic and

interesting character because they slowly come to fruition enticing the reader to continue

Telemachus’s first change is his growth to maturity. He starts as a boy who has

never killed before . This changes when he comes to the defense of his father. In this

situation he is not only forced to kill one man but many , like said here “ Odysseus,

. . .

Lastly Telemachus begins to learn to control his anger and aggressiveness

showing that he has matured to a new plateau. This is not easy for any person , but especially difficult for a

young man reaching adulthood .

Thus , this event makes him stronger and a more dynamic character . His entire demeanor

changes once his father returns. Also , he shows

determination by keeping his fathers whereabouts from his mother . Here shown is Telemachus’s thoughts after his father has been so

bluntly struck by Antinous in the court yard, “ Slowly he shook his head from side to

side, containing murderous thoughts . This must of been

hard for him to do. He became enraged , but did nothing because he knew only bad

things would result .

Telemachus shows his determination when he sets out to find his father .

Thus his determination leads him to react ,which changes from him being more laid back

in the beginning of the story, to wanting answers to the many questions in his life. servants kill every suitor”(Homer , 1231-1233). This is something he would have never attempted to do in the past . Converting him

slowly and painfully from a boy to a man. He

becomes so determined that he asks for a boat and his request is acknowledged by this

response from Antinous “You shall have your boat to see if your father has indeed

perished in the Sea of Pasidine “ (801-802). But he new that it was the only way to guarantee his fathers safe

return home .
