Celie and Nettie both went through hard times although there was an array of differences between the two. They both came out stronger and more aware of the oppression that women of that generation had to face. They had to lean to stand up for themselves to the one who would try to bring them down regardless if it was man, woman or child. She got to be able to be able to educated and led a good full life. Their spiritual journeys would eventually change their whole views on society as a whole, and how both men and women should interact. She barely had any joy in her life other than from seeing Nettie.

Celia’s’ journey began when she was very young. She also got to take care of Celie’s’ children which Celie never got a chance to do. tter while our new mammy was sick…I duck into my room and come out wearing horsehair, feathers, and a pair of our new mammy high heel shoes…he beat me for dressing trampy but do it to me anyway. She was only being beaten, neglected, and billeted. They need to learn to stand up for themselves and stand up for their rights, and break the viscous cycle that was taught to them throughout their whole lives.
