Oh Mexico!
In Monclova, Mexico my life was changed by the image of a man that will never leave my mind. Hector, a seventy year old, is a work horse in the house of God. Hector helped build over one hundred churches in Mexico every summer for the past ten years. Despite his age, and his knowledge of English, one thing was evident, everyone loved him and so did the Lord. The youth group traveled to Mexico for a mission week of helping build a church. We would wake up at five thirty every morning, and head out to the vans. After we got to the site we would have a quick devotional, and after that we would get started early before the sun came up. Work throughout the whole week included carrying, cutting, and placing rhubarb. Then, after Hector had determined the rhubarb was in the correct places we would tie it. After the rhubarb was completely ready we would begin mixing cement, but once you start mixing you can’t stop! Thank the Lord we had a cement mixer and we didn’t have to do the Hector . . .
During my two years in Mexico I watched Hector work and he never stopped through what the local townspeople called a “cool” one hundred and ten degrees. Hector could do anything with a sledge hammer, where most men at the age of seventy can’t even pick one up. I know that He will never leave my side even if I try to leave His. To know that you gave people something that they couldn’t have had without you makes me feel valuable. Not a day goes by without one thought from Mexico going through my mind and either making me laugh or making me thankful I am a Christian. Before we left the worksite we looked at what we had accomplished with a roof, a few walls, and a garden with a background setting of the sunset. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. Work was normally finished around four thirty every day, but on the day of the mixing we stayed until it was finished around eight. After that experience we had a pizza dinner that night, since all we had that week was Mexican. His western shirt, blue jeans and hat using his strong arms and hands to smack the rhubarb down in the building correctly will stick with me forever. That accomplishment with my image of Hector will sit in my mind for the rest of my life. Later on that night everyone came together for a moving devotional which touched everyone, and you could see the love through our eyes. So to serve us is what Christ is all about. I can look at the time I spent in Mexico with my youth group and know that there are two churches that have places to go because of what God did through us.
