Historical Event Depicted -The integration that took place in Little Rock

1. Melba Pattillo- the author and narrator of the book; She was 15 when the integration took place

2. Lois Peyton(mother Lois )- Melbas mother, who was also a teacher ; She was very strong and supportive

the Board of Education of Topeka trial, Little Rock School Board decided to limit integration to Central High, but it wouldn't take place until September, 1957; Several black students in the school district decided to integrate.

- Inside the school, the blacks receive little or no protection by the staff, and are treated so harshly by beating and other violence from their peers, many times their lives are risked.

- The next year the school did not reopen; The decision was either let the blacks back in the following year, or close the school; and the decision ended up being close the school. Their only protection is from a few good soldiers, a few white teens, and each other. Vince- Melba's crush, who she gets to go out with occasionally

-In February 1956, the NAACP filed a lawsuit in the federal district court to make school integrate immediately, but lost: Yet by August Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP ended up getting permission to start. Link- A white boy, who helps Melba secretly, which many times saved her life because of the harsh things that took place inside the school.

- By May of 1958 all troops were removed form Central. It portrayed what happened to these courageous teens in a way we could relate too, because they were all around the same age as us and were experiancing high school, just as we did- except they had to deal with so much more violence.

Main Events-

-After the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were illegal in the Brown vs.

-The day before school opens, the governer Faubus calls the Arkansas National Guard to the High, and the day school opens the integrating students don't go, and that day the Federal Judge Davis orders integration begins September 4th.

- Melba's mothers article was published in the Arkansas Gazette; It was a article in response to her job being threatened by Melba's bravery and courage, and the only way she could get it back was if she withdrew Melba from the integration, which she refused to do; Eventually it was renewed.
