Teamsters

             In the year 1903, jobs were scarce and insecure. An average worker worked between twelve and eight-teen hours per day, for an income of or around two dollars each day (4). Workers were not only expected to accomplish there given tasks, but to take responsibility for any damages to the product they were producing. There was no insurance in case one was injured on the job and could not return to work. In this case, the injured worker would be out of a job. It is because of these horrible working conditions that teamster unions formed to protect themselves from these liabilities that employers were holding them accountable for. These unions caught the interest of the American Federation of Labor. Leader of the group, Samuel Gompers, called on several local workers to create a National Teamster Union. By the end of the next year, the Team Drivers International Union (TDIU) was formed. From the beginning there were near 1,700 members. Around the same time, another teamster union was forming. The Teamster National Union felt that by joining with The Team Drivers International, they could create a stronger union. In 1903, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) was formed in Niagara Falls (4). The Teamsters struggled through out there first few years of existence. There were no labor laws and companies used anti-trust laws against the unions. In 1905, the IBT started a violent strike against the Montgomery Ward Company. This strike took 21 lives and cost nearly one million dollars. This was a huge setback for the union and made it clear that it was time for change. In 1907, Daniel Tobin was elected president of IBT. He brought much needed leadership to the union, and gave them new momentum.
