The Families, especially the portrayal of the fathers, were another group of character depicted in different manners. This is made more important because of the way Mercutio dies, amplifying the importance of the relationship.
Romeo in Baz Luhrmann’s version is a boy who acts on his impulses which has a major impact in R+J. In R&J, the two parties dressed in the same manner. The Romeo in R&J is very strong, thoughtful whilst being sympathetic. The growth of black-American involvement in the entertainment industry along with social issues thus resulted in the character played by a black actor in the 20th century version. We often see Romeo in Surf Hawaiian shirts in R+J. Also Mercutio’s relationship with Romeo in R+J is much stronger that in R&J. The Montague’s in the other hand were dressed as casuals. The idea of love from the old movie is more innocent, that the new R+J because of the introduction of more violent themes, which may plays a part in Romeos new attitude along with his behaviors. Juliet in R+J is very strong, as with the strengthening of the role of women in the society. The character is somewhat jollified with the adding of humour with fun that is demanded to satisfy the modern day viewers.
