Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was born March 30th, 1853, in Groot Zundert, in the north Brabant region of the Netherlands. He lived there until he was 16 years old.

When Vincent was 20 he was promoted to Goupil's London branch and moved to England. He started to work at a schoolhouse when he was 25 years old. He really didn't like that job because he didn't receive enough money, so he returned to Holland on December 1786 to work in a bookstore.

In 1878 he moved to Borinage where he began to work as a lay preacher. Soon after he became a preacher, he started to draw in earnest. In 1881 he moved in with his parents in Etten. He grew up in the country side. That is why some say he drew hills regularly in some drawings. Later in 1881 he moved to the Hague where he took painting lessons from a famous painter named Anton Mauve, the cousin of Van Gogh's father.

Vincent and his father had maintained a severely strained relationship over the last few years and, while certainly not happy about his father's death, Vincent was quite emotionally detached and continued his work. Vincent's sisters' names were Anna, Elizabeth, and Wilhelmien. Anna was two years younger than Vincent and Vincent and her were fairly good friends.

Vincent van Gogh had many hard times in his life. Elizabeth was also two years younger than Vincent and though they weren't very close ,she made a book of her thoughts about him and published it in 1910. Vincent and Theo had always been close as children and throughout most of their adult lives maintained an ongoing and poignantly revealing correspondence It is these letters, in total more than 700 extant, which form most of our knowledge of Van Gogh's perceptions about his own life and works. Vincent laboured throughout March and April on these studies, briefly distracted from his work by the death of his father on 26 March. Sometimes he would get so mad, he couldn't control his temper. One of the side effects was you saw mostly yellow and gold. Her father was a bookseller at his own bookstore. When his father died, Van Gogh was even more depressed, so he went to live with his brother Theo in France. Van Gogh always had bad luck with women. That is why people thought most of his paintings had yellow and gold colors in them.
