Gender Roles in Music

The Beastie Boys are one group whose portrayal of femininity has changed over the years. In their first albums they viewed women as objects there for their pleasure so their portrayal was negative. In their latest albums they apologize for their actions and for the actions of all men so their portrayal now is positive. They also speak out against the abuse of women. The video for "Fight For Your Right" they portray women as objects. At one point Adrock pulls a girl onto a couch with him and starts kissing her. Later a girl stops in front of him and the camera and he both pause on her behind. Adrock chases after that girl and Mike D. proceeds to start kissing the girl Adrock was kissing. Later MCA is seen chasing a girl around the room. Mike D. also chases a girl around the room. The only time they show women as being intelligent is when they are making fun of them or throwing a pie at them. Their song "Girls" really portrays women negatively. They say all they really want is girls. Then they proceed to tell what t

Near the end of the song they really degrade women saying, "Girls - to do the dishes Girls - to clean up my room Girls - to do the laundry Girls - and in the bathroom. MCA says, "I want to say a little something that's long overdue. They also talk about what types of women they like. It lyrics say, "What makes you feel And why you gotta be Like you got the right To look her up and down What makes this world So sick and evil I know you don't know What makes you feel Like you got miracle whip appeal Who made you the judge and jury Ain't you ever heard of privacy What makes this world So sick and evil You figure it out. hey like about them and it isn't how smart they are. In the song "Sure Shot" they talk about the disrespecting of women. They show through the lyrics, "she robbed us blind - she talk all we own," that women will sleep with you just so they can take your money and other valuables. They realized that how they acted was wrong and in a sense grew up and matured. Over the years the Beastie Boys' portrayal of women has changed, which is a good thing. They have set an example for all other rappers to follow.
