E-Business in Bharti Telecom

The main purpose of this report is to view the growth opportunity of a small e-business in Bharti Televentures. The paper elaborates on Bharti¡¯s internal e Learning, done in partnership with 24x7learning and Skillsoft. Bharti is also establishing offline learning through the Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology & Management in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) located in Delhi.

The assignment is divided into three parts. Part 1 explains the e-Learning revenue model from two dimensions: shareholder welfare and profitability, currently and how its likely to grow. The second part focus on the performance metrics associated with the purpose of the business, where a number of measurements were considered from the CEO perspective. The last segment is the valuation of the e-business opportunity, or how the e-learning activity is creating value to Bharti Televentures.

E-learning prevail over traditional schools particularly in rural/not developed areas in India, where the access to universities can be expensive and difficult.

The valuation basis for the e-learning centre will partly focus on the database created for other organisations and government, providing Bharti with the capability of perceiving what is happening in competitors and even predict changes/moves in the environment. The current e-learning revenue model for Bharti is aimed to build cutting-edge employee capability in terms of technology related skills, customer service and product innovation capability. The environment where Bharti operates is evolving fast, driven by the constant updating of technology, so fast response to the market is essential in order to survive. When a new product needs to be launched, Bharti can train managers, sales team, related areas and suppliers much faster and more cost-effectively than the traditional media, so the new product or service can be brought to market faster than Bharti¡¯s competitors. Potential e- learning customers would also be able to access the e-learning web site and pay the fee directly to the Bharti by credit card, money order or bank draft.

The specific metric system to be set up for the new opportunities will be slightly different from those of current internal e-learning activities. Bharti¡¯s would be perceived as a leader in e-education for the industry adding credibility and strengthening its brand image in terms of the competition and build its social capital. The paper identified that shareholder value can be created through e learning so as to remain current technologically, have quality personnel and leverage on its Knowledge base assets.
