             The teaching of Language Arts encompasses reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, more time in the school day is devoted to the teaching of reading than any other school subject. It becomes increasingly difficult for students to be successful in any subject area if their reading problems are not solved. One important aspect of helping students to become better readers is helping students become better spellers. Improving spelling skills will help enhance reading skills especially in exceptional children.
             Spelling is the forming of words from letters, although words can be spelled orally, the written form is very important because students use it when communicating with others, writing assignments for teachers, notes to friends, letters to relatives, or grocery list for themselves. Although spelling is very important it is often an unattained outcome of language arts instruction.
             In the article "Promoting better spelling and reading performance" by Steve Gram and Karen Harris, there are three important reasons why spelling instruction is important. First, poor spelling can influence a child's competence as a writer. When teachers evaluate student's papers differing only in the number of spelling mistakes, papers with more spelling mistakes are assigned lower marks for writing quality.
             Secondly, early problems with spelling can interfere with the execution of other composing processes. For example, when you need to switch their attention during composing to mechanical demands; such as thinking about how to spell a word and so forth. This may lead to the child forgetting what he are she had plan to say.
             Finally, learning about spelling can enhance children reading development, especially their ability to pronounce words correctly and decode unknown words.
