Conflicts in Solon
In this paper, I would like to discuss the conflicts between Athenians in Solonfs time. In order to do so, I divided the paper into three sections. In the first section, I will discuss the conflicts between peasants and aristocrats. After that, I will talk about the conflicts between aristocrats themselves. Finally, I will discuss how the political laws at that time show these situations. For the source, I would use gThe Rise and Fall of Athens: Nine Greek Livesh, written by Plutarch, and gThe Constitution of Athensh, written by Aristotle (in J.M. Moore, Ed.). This is the first section of the paper. In this section, I will talk about the conflicts between aristocrats and peasants and the solutions Solon tried to give. I will divide the section into five parts.1. Two classes: aristocrats and peasantsIn Solonfs Athens, people were divided into two classes: one rich and one poor. The rich class is called aristocrats, and the poor class is called peasants. Aristocrats only covered two percents of the population. Most of them were big landowners and had inherited wealth. 153)hThe first situation the constitution stated was the abolishment of the debt slavery (section ‡T). The second class consisted of men who could afford a horse, or possessed an income of 300 measures, and these, because they paid a ehorse taxf, were known as Knights. 2)h However, since only aristocrats could afford buying goods other than necessities and they were only two percent of the population, the trading market was very small and limited; hence, most of the peasants still need to earn their lives from farming (Tr). Summary In this paper, I have discussed the conflicts between peasants and aristocrats, the conflicts between aristocrats themselves and Solonfs actions in respond to these conflicts. This section will be divided into parts. 2)h What Solon wanted was that the relationship between the families would be decreased; however, though the sizes of dowries were limited, in fact it still kept its function (Tr). Section ‡V So far, we have looked at the conflicts between aristocrats and peasants, and aristocrats themselves.
