Two people touch Jemima very much in this story, Geraldine, a money-hungry, gorgeous co-worker who uses Jemima’s writing abilities to her advantage. Then there is the striking and talented Ben Williams is also a co-worker. However, he also happens to be the love of Jemima’s life, unfortunately, he is ignorant to the fact that Jemima has any feelings for him.
As the Kilburn Herald goes online, she meets Brad, a wonderful California hunk, in an Internet chat room. After that day, everything changes for Jemima. To Brad, she is known as the slim, hip, spellbinding, glamorous, “JJ”. Brad and her talk for some time and come to the conclusion that they should meet, there is only one major problem, Jemima isn’t not the JJ that Brad thinks that she is and she much change in order to meet his expectations. Once Jemima is in California there are many people and events that help her to realize that California is not that place for her and that

In the story there are many romantic moments shared between friends and between lovers. One long sentence is used when Jemima is thinking about Ben and his evening activities:
When the reports start he pulls his feet off the coffee table and leans forward, elbows on his knees, dangling the bottle of beer…Ben mimics him over and over again, until Ben’s voice is almost indistinguishable from the reporter’s (p. It also betrays her trust and masks her ability to properly judge Brad’s attitude and personality. 297) With the use of irony of situation, this quote is telling you that the narrator is beginning to observe inconsistencies in Brad’s activities. A problem novel “derives its chief interest from working out some central problem. Those of a European decent mainly use those terms. “She’s an old friend,” reveals Williams, “whom I hadn’t seen for a while and then we met up recently and we became more then friends. She has worked hard and earned her spot there where many people look to her for advice, therefore, she could not leave them without their advice.
The minor theme of Jemima J is: looking for love in all the wrong places. I don’t think I even knew it was love until we were apart, and now I’m just killing time until she comes home.
