International relations: Using Theoretical Lenses

It's not hard for many of us to take a look at lives and see how greatly we are effected by the influences of the world around us. Our jobs and salaries depend on international markets. Our economy reflects hardships in foreign countries as well as our own. The prices at the gas pumps make us curse under our breaths about the middle east. And nothing is a great pain than trying to get through the airport. But may for many of us, we have no clue how the country should react to international relations. What do the politicians and news papers mean when they talk about liberalist and realist? The purpose of this paper is to explain and define these theoretical lenses. By definition liberalism is "a political theory favoring civil and political liberties, government by law with consent of the governed, and protected from arbitrary authority" (AHC, 781). The key word throughout the definition is most definitely "liberty". The great developers of this theory, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean- Jacques Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant, all started their discussions of liberalism by mentioning that man, in his natural state, is good and that it is because of corrupt social institu


Realist, believing that man's nature is based on selfish pretenses and because of this that he is destine to strike out in his best interest, take precautions towards itself and other nations. Since liberalist believe that man's nature is good and that problems with other countries can be solved through international committees they stand strictly to the idea that the government shouldn't limited the freedoms of the people unless it is completely justified to do so. The liberalist intend to focus their attention on individual leaders and the state when analyzing events. It appears apparent that the best answer to deal with international relations is a mixture of the both competing theories. stated it's intentions for invading Iraq were based on the fact that Saddam Hussein threaten that Iraq had weapon of mass destruction available for use in an attack against the U. Thus President Bush was seeking to address the threat of terrorism upon his country and wished to make an example of these terrorist groups to the world and calm the fears of his people.
