About Statistics

An important project that was in its early stages at GR&AP dealt with commercial sex workers. The department undertook to write a comparative paper on laws related to commercial sex work around the world. I was originally asked to do the research for Canada, and later on was assigned New Zealand, Thailand, Nepal, and India. The research on these countries' laws was very interesting, and allowed me to gain a better understanding of how other countries' laws operate. I wrote reports for each country and passed them on to my immediate supervisor, who assembled and edited all the reports for review by the co ordinator of the project. The comparative paper was the first step in a lengthy research initiative that the gender department is hoping will result in changing the relevant legislation in Namibia.Another project I was able to work on was the launch of the Domestic Violence Advocacy Campaign. This project had been in the making for some time, and I felt very fortunate to be able to participate in its launch. The campaign was a multi media project with several different components. There was a mural campaign in which school aged children from around the country designed and painted large scale murals having to do with ways of pre

Nevertheless, I spent the day of the launch preparing the hall and creating a poster board display of the various campaign components. The actors were all quite young, but were very talented individuals. FINAL REMARKSMy experience at the LAC and in Namibia generally was an overwhelmingly positive experience. The highlights of my internship were many. There was also a website design competition, again for school aged children. The Committee continued its human rights work following the end of apartheid in 1994 primarily as a research center on issues pertaining to human rights concerns. We often acted as a referral service or first point of contact for asylum seekers who are unable to access government services or afford legal counsel. In 1964, the SWAPO party had apparently promised the people in the Caprivi region that they would be permitted their own independence upon the granting of Namibia's. Using this data collected from our monitoring activities we would issue statements to the press, the human rights commission or consultative government bodies to lobby for changes and improvements to the asylum seeker system. i) Walk in client advice service:The main component of my work involved providing client advice at our afternoon walk in center. This was a long lesson to learn, but a very important one and one that ought to be passed on to future interns. After learning of his abduction by the church members and immigration's plans to have him deported, I attended the airport and had an emergency interdict drafted to halt the deportation. However, what I personally consider to be the success stories of the placement would have to be the instances for which the work of the project and myself had a visibly beneficial impact on the circumstances of clients. This is particularly problematic in South Africa as there is no grant system and left many asylum seekers destitute and unable to provide for themselves and their families during the years it takes to have their claims adjudicated. Hence the "Uprooted People's Project" was born.
