New England and the Chesapeake Region
Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both lettled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two societies. The main resons for this were mostly based on the type of people from England who chose to settle in both of the areas. Also, how the areas were settled. New England was very supportive of their faith and religion but the people who emmigrated to the Chesapeake region were not motivated about the religion. It also shows that everything was done in God's name. Many of the children who were immigrants learned religion when they were very young. The immigrants wanted material things, not ideas. New England were close followers of their church and the South became independant and could fight to get what they wanted. Also, they came in large families and brought their servants with them (Document B). The independence of the pioneers of Virginia can be seen in Bacon's Manifesto. Many immigrants attempted to go back when they ran into problems, instead of getting rich (Document F). About everything was different between New England and the Chesapeake region. Many common laws were justified by the bible (Document C). rolled the church also controlled the local government. They believed that if they made it through all of their hard times, that nobody had the right to impose laws on them. The population was very small and the dangers were huge. The religious control of New England evolved to be very simple and not widespread as it was in Virgina. All regulations and laws were based on the bible.
