Sun Also Rises

First there is Jake Barnes. Then we have Robert Cohn. Next up is the charming Michael Campbell. Finally the young Pedro Romero enters the story. These four men have one thing in common; they all fall in love with the beautiful Lady Brett Ashley. Unfortunately for them, Brett grows unsatisfied with each of them and moves from one to the other. She causes each of them to fall hopelessly in love with her and then breaks their hearts. This is why she is the one responsible for their actions.

Jake handles the end of his relationship with Brett fairly well. The other three, however, do not deal with things as well. Cohn’s love for Brett is evident from the time he and Brett return from their stay in San Sebastian. From this point on Cohn begins to act a little strange. He follows Brett wherever she goes and stares at her constantly while they are in Pamplona. Not only do the other men make comments about how Cohn is driving them crazy, but so too does Brett: “My God! I’m so sick of him” (185)! Cohn falls victim to Brett’s char

Saying that Mike’s actions are under control is hardly accurate, and his bitterness towards Brett becomes apparent on that same page as he announces to the group, “Brett’s got a bull-fighter. His actions are uncalled for and preventable, but they are brought upon by Brett herself. Mike tells Cohn on multiple occasions that he is not wanted and that he should just leave. After she and Romero escape to Madrid together, Jake receives two telegrams with the same message: “COULD YOU COME HOTEL MONTANA MADRID AM RATHER IN TROUBLE BRETT” (242, 243). m and has a ruddy time getting over her. Jake makes the following note during his narration: “I was nervous about Mike. He must have been drinking all the time, but he seemed to be under control. The men do not know that she is trouble and that is why she is the one at fault for the situations she gets into. Still, Cohn’s antics go far beyond any of the other gentlemen’s antics; towards the end of the book he gets into a fight with Mike, Jake, and Romero. After Jake arrives she tells him what the trouble is: “He wanted to marry me, finally…He really wanted to marry me. Brett is a woman with no apparent agenda who floats from man to man without realizing what she is doing to them. So I couldn’t go away from him, he said. She continuously breaks men’s hearts.
