...and all the children are above

School achievement of children in America is something that is always being tested. Americans want to know how their children compare to other children from around the world. I personally am very interested to know how smart I am compared to others. The study in this chapter talk about an investigation that took place under the supervision of researchers Harold Stevenson and Shin-Ying Lee. Their investigation was to find out which elementary school children are above average in a cross cultural study of school achievement.

The researches tried to make this study as valid and reliable as possible. Validity is the extent to which a study accurately measures what it is supposed to measure. Validity is divided into two different forms, internal and external. An internal validity is when a study “thoroughly and rigorously tests the corr

. . .

A questionnaire was given to the student’s teachers about their teaching styles, classroom management and daily schedules. An important measure of this study was also that the children were given achievement tests in math and reading. The researchers collected data from 240 kids, their mothers and their teachers.

The results found from all the data that was collected was that American children did worse than the Asian students on the achievement tests. They were randomly selected from each of the three groups which consisted of high, medium and low scorers on a reading test that was given to all of the students in the study. The children were asked to rate how they felt about homework, math, reading and school attendance. Also it was discovered that Asian children put a lot more emphasis on their studies than do American children. Ten schools were chosen from each city, they randomly picked two first grade classes and two fifth grade classes from each school. That means that your findings are valid and they can be repeated.

The researchers did an investigation that focused on three different cities, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Taipei, Taiwan; and Sendai, Japan. Since the investigation that i am about to explain in this chapter isn’t an experiment, reliability and validity play important roles. Reliability is the measure of consistency. American students spend less time in school and more time at home playing.
