Hang gliding has changed significantly over the years. That was once considered a dangerous activity for thrill seekers is now considered a legitimate sport. Hang gliding has gained more cultural acceptance, and the sport has grown steadily in popularity since the 70’s.
New technology has made gliders safer and easier to use. Many improvements have been made in hang gliding equipment, training programs, and safety procedures. Hang gliding associations and schools make it easy to learn how to hang glide. With classes ranging from beginner to advanced, anyone can find training at their level. Many exciting advances have been made in the world of non-motorized flight.
The modern hang glider has made several improvements over its 1970's counterpart. The hang glider of the 1970's was constructed of an aluminum tubing frame with either Nylon, Mylar, or Dacron as the sailcloth. In the mid 1970's, hang glider manufacturers developed curved leading edges to reduce wing-twist.

In the seventies, when the sport was beginning, people would hang glide with the bare minimum of safety devices.
Hang gliders can come equipped with a altimeter, which is a device that allows the pilot to know exactly how high they are. Some modern hang gliders are using struts instead of cables for bottom rigging. There are para-gliders which can fit in a backpack, sports class gliders which are easy to rig and control, and performance hang gliders which are difficult to rig but have precise control. Gilders weren’t allowed over public restricted air space such as State and Federal parks, and the Application trail. They can also have a device called a variometer, which would keep track of the pilot’s rate of climb, or of descent.
During this period of time hang gliders encountered various problems. These will serve to two main functions; primarily they will protect the eyes while gliding. Most groups today offer beginner training and rate the areas. The equipment is stronger and easier to steer, training programs are excellent, and safety has improved significantly.
