Montana 1948
In the novel Montana1948 by Larry Watson a locally acclaimed doctor and war hero, Frank Hayden is caught sexually abusing local Native American women. His brother Wesley who is the county sheriff catches him and locks him in his basement where Frank commits suicide. Wesley is your traditional well mannered countryside sheriff fighting with the dark side of his family. Wesley shows an extreme disapproval for his father's lavish life style. His father owns one of the largest farms in all of Bentrock and isn't the least bit shy to show it off
And even with enough evidence to convict him 5 times over he kept looking to fin one flaw, one fact that would cancel out the other but unfortunately he doesn't find a single flaw. To me he represents the morally conscious outcast of the family who is rarely accepted in modern society. e spoils Wesley's son, David, much to his father's dismay. He's very ethical, he had the option to ignore it or change facts to save his brother but he couldn't for Wesley didn't believe in lying. He peered deeper and harder in to every clue to find the horrible truth that he honestly didn't want to find. He is frustrated to the brink of insanity fighting within himself over what he should do. He gives David anything he could wish for including a rifle and a horse which his father disapproved of highly. In a nutshell Wesley Hayden is an unhappy man, with a job he doesn't like, and family that he loves and hates at the same time. This shows his true love for his brother, for anyone else Wesley would have stopped as soon as he could but this time he kept probing trying to find a way out for Frank but there was none. Wesley looked at every aspect of his brother's crime during his investigation. Wesley shows his true colors when it comes time to look into his brothers crimes. Wesley tried to raise David to be humble but Grandfather Hayden won't have it. And above all he was disappointed in Frank his good, clean brother, the war hero of the town and one of the most respectable people in the county.
