Attention Deficit Disorder

Have you ever had problems sitting through an entire movie, or just felt fidgety? The majority of Americans would answer that question with a yes, but it is still used as a criterion for diagnosing Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The amount of children diagnosed with ADD has tripled in the last ten years, and the number of prescription for the psychiatric drug Ritalin has doubled. We, as a nation, need to ask ourselves whether or not we are using ADD has an "all of the above" category for misfits, and children with behavior problems; creating a complicated label for them. The increase in the number of people diagnosed with ADD could have some negative effects on the population. The over diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder has led to a severe misuse of psychiatric drugs, a misconstruity of the situation, and has provided fuel for a new national stigma. Ritalin is a stimulant, a short-acting drug that is not a cure, but an effective treatment, like eyeglasses for near-sightedness, but it also has the potential to be a devastatingly dangerous drug. Ritalin is quickly replacing marijuana has the new "gateway" drug (Vatz par 3). It is used as a quick "stay awake" drug on coll

The validity and reliability of the diagnosis process has not been demonstrated, and there still remain many doubts (Jaska par 32). As specialist Henry Armstrong states, "80% of 'ADD' kids don't even carry the symptoms (Armstrong par 4). The reports trickling out of rural towns, urban centers, and affluent suburbs have now become a steady drip: Prescription pills meant to treat ADHD in children are quietly being emptied out of vials and passed from hand to hand, given or sold to fellow students. Ritalin has the potential to be both a miraculous and a devastating drug. The only way to prevent this epidemic from becoming disastrous is to educate America on ADD/ADHD and its relief. There are still many irregularities on whether or not a significant number of diagnosed children were diagnosed correctly. The diagnosis and interpretation of the disease itself varies with which physician is talked with. It provides for significant behavior changes, and can drastically help some children with attention deficit disorder (Henderson par 4). This creates this label that kids with ADD or ADHD are dumb and can't sit still and almost all of the time that isn't true. Doctors, psychologists, and social workers say that a media blitz has turned ADD into the buzzword for the nineties. The Supreme Court recently rejected a proposal to include ADD as a handicap (Henderson par 10). The over diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder has created a new label for these categorized children. Children with ADD/ADHD are seen as different, or even weird. Some physicians actually believe that society has invented ADD to help preserve its social order.
