Huck Finn
Huckleberry Finn, an English Classic, written by Mark Twain, differs from the movie version of the story. In the novel and movie, when Huck and Jim get separated when the steamboat went by, and the raft and steamboat collide, Huck goes ashore. In the novel, however, Huck spots an old house, and despite his getting barked at by the dogs, the boy walks to the front door. The people who owned the house, the Grangerfords were inside, and one of the men calls off the dogs and invites Huck into his home. In the movie version, dogs and the residents of the shack were outside on the hill located in front of the home. The folk told him to get inside their dwelling and immediately questioned him, ensuring he was not of the Shepherdson family. The video creates a great visual, yet, when it doesn't follow Twain's work - the original, it makes it difficult to enjoy it, because the novel, in general, was more effective than the movie. Tom is present during this incident, and he wants to come up with a crafty way of freeing the runaway slave. In the movie, Huck goes to Jim's jail cell and frees him immediately, rather than in a few weeks, which is what happened in the novel. In the written version, Jim's freeing takes place at the Phelps' plantation. Three of the bigger differences in the movie include the video version not mentioning Tom Sawyer, the Wilks sisters last action in the movie, and the freeing of Jim. This is a major part missing from the video, the novel version was definitely more effective and impactful because Huck has someone who he looks up to and wants to be like. Tom Sawyer, a major influence on Huck Finn, was not present or mentioned in the movie. In the novel, Tom is Huck's leader and someone Huck looks up to. Twain's version is more impactful - it is also more realistic than suddenly going to Jim's cell and freeing him as quickly as he did. The novel was more effective because it was the original - this was Mark Twain's idea and composition - and it was more realistic than coincidentally having the Wilks arrive at the time of Jim's hanging. The movie and novel versions differed, and some of the scenes were better in the film than in the book. Huck frees Jim, in the Huckleberry Finn's book. Sawyer's missing in the movie made it so Huck didn't have that role model and he is more independent because of Tom's not being present. In the movie, Huck is without his long time friend.
