            A Leader Named Ralph
             In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding navigates the reader through a process of what a society would face without rules or with a split leadership. He uses one of the main characters, Ralph, to show what a leader should possess in a situation such as this. Some of the qualities he discusses are that of initiative, structure, and being open to suggestions.
             One quality that all leaders possess is initiative, and Ralph is no exception. Throughout the novel Ralph is seen as someone who is not afraid to go first or take charge of a situation. "Behind Ralph the tall grass [fills] with silent hunters. Ralph looks at Jack. 'You are a hunter.' Jack [goes] red. 'I know. All right.' Something deep in Ralph [speaks] from him. 'I am chief. I will go. Do not argue.' He [turns] to the others. 'You. Hide here. Wait for me'"(Ch.6). The kids are going to search for the beast and when they get to where they think it is Ralph decides it is best if he goes first and everyone else stays behind while he looks things over. In this situation Ralph shows one of his leadership qualities by taking initiative.
             Ralph, like most all other great leaders, believes in structure. He knows the importance of this, and knows without it or rules the chance of rescue for the kids and him is very

             slim. "'Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?'"(Ch.11). In this quote from the novel Ralph is trying to stress the importance of having rules, and without them they may never leave the island and even worse it may bring the downfall of themselves. Ralph leads the readers to believe without the rules the tribe will not survive.
