The religious law of Christianity that we are to follow today consists of Jesus Christ’s commandments, the Apostles directions, and the examples of the early Christians as they lived under the direct leadership of the Apostles. These lessons are drawn from the stories of Christians living before Christ’s birth. Through this systematic arrangement the Bible seeks to teach its readers what Christianity is and why religious law should be followed before it teaches how to follow the law and the repercussions for ignoring these teachings. It was written primarily by Moses and was based on commandments he received from God.
While the Old Testament is preparatory, temporary, and limited, the New Testament is complete, eternal, and universal. From the Old Testament Christians learn of how mankind was created and why they need salvation. Its current purpose, however, is not one of law, but of learning, admonition, and comfort. Included in the text of this testament are a record of our planet’s creation and its inhabitants, the history of man and his need for a savior, and the prophecies of Jesus Christ’s arrival. This Testament begins with the birth of Jesus Christ and ends with the Revelation, which is a foretelling of future events. These revelations tell of an imminent final showdown between God and Satan.
