Patriotism

Patriotism is defined as the act of loving, supporting, and honoring one's country. I would say it is that and so much more. Patriotism has elements of emotion that are difficult to describe, such as the chills of happiness that wash over one's being in moments of patriotic pride, I experienced this feeling for a long time after September 11th attacks, when George Bush gave a speech, in which he simply concluded by stating, "Let's Roll!" The emotion I refer to is an unspoken oneness with fellow citizens. In truly patriotic people, it id not a fleeting feeling, but remains in the heart, always ready to be felt and acted upon.
Unfortunately, patriotism if often laced with sadness and grieving, as we all well know. Saddest of all to me, is the way some people use it as an excuse to act out in acts of violence or prejudice against others. These acts are not patriotic, in the least, but inhumane cruelty.
Certainly, every country contains a degree of patriotism, but I can only speak from the viewpoint of a loyal American. As such, I consider myself blessed beyond measure to be an American Citizen. Our aspirations, beliefs, and desires are attainable and allowed to be acted upon, within reason. Our judicial system, though far from perfect, strives to provide protection and fairness to a degree that far exceeds other countries, in my opinion. We defend the weak and oppressed to the best of our ability.
Moreover, I am proud to be a female American. We still have a long way to go, but Women's Rights in the United States of America are setting a wonderful precedence for the entire world. We may have as many daughters as we wish. Here, no one is forced to abort a baby girl, unlike some countries. They may dress in style to express their individuality, and even wear make-up and squeaky shoes, if they wish. They may dance, sing, laugh and learn. Violence against them is simply unacceptable.
