Mencius and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Many philosophers have ideas that are implemented and practiced in our society today. Philosophers are the true originators of the study of human behavior. The works of Mencius has shaped the history of China and has made a deep impact on how we look at the past. It is thru their ideas and notes that we are able to understand what went on in history. Moreover their ideas can be used today and has shaped how our modern society functions. Mencius was a follower of Confucius. Thru his studies he has made an assumption how what human nature is like. Mencius believes that humans are born good and thru external influences and lack of education they become misdirected and evil. This idea is demonstrated in the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”

The movie revolves around education or the lack of it. The nature of the characters of the movie is demonstrated through their level of education. During the opening scenes of the movie we are introduced to the character of Li Mui Bai. He is one of the great swordsmen and is very well disciplined and educated. He understands the way of the warrior and has knowledge from what is right or wrong. He was trained as a Wu Dan fighter and holds the highest ranking in Wu Dan. This is because he has

According to Mencius, humans are born good and know what is right from wrong. (Lee, Schamus 114) To gain this much respect, Li Mui Bai has dedicated his life to learning the way of the warrior. ” (Legg 237)

Here a King has sent for the advice of Mencius because he realizes he did not educated himself to excel at his duties. They do not seek knowledge and do not gain wisdom from experience. This is because she has the knowledge gained through experience and education. It is only through hard work and knowledge that one is able to bring out the true side of human nature. (Lee, Schamus 30) In many instances, Li Mui Bai has demonstrated that he is a true leader. According to Mencius, without guidance and education, one would fall into a state of ignorance and evil. I am afraid I may not be able to discharge my duty in the great business that I have entered on; do you again consult Mencius for me. Ignorance is the key to many misguided people.
