             Though many backgrounds have differences, there are still universal views which tie cultures together. Cultural diversity between ethnicity's is evident, though many view issues the same way and incorporate those same views into their lifestyle. This proves that there is pluralism between cultures. This is the thesis of Strikkers who is the author of the article on "Instrumental Relativism and Cultivated Pluralism: Alain Locke and Philosophy's Quest for a Common World." The film Mississippi Masala by Mira Nair is a strong supporter of this idea.
             In the film Mississippi Masala, we see an Indian family from Uganda which has been forced to exile and leave the country as well as tens of thousands of Indians by Idi Amin. Mina is the main character of the story, who is a beautiful young Indian woman. Her father Jay and her mother Kinnu have decided to help run a roadside motel, which is owned by Anil, Mina's uncle.
             While driving a car one day, Mina crashes into a van. The van incidentally belongs to Demetrius. At that point they exchange addressees and are on their way. Mina's uncle has a talk with Demetrius to persuade him not to sue. Eventually they go out on a date. Once Mina's parents find out about the relationship, they are disgusted and do not approve. They were concerned for Mina's disregard of their values and traditions of the culture. Mina is expected to marry within her Indian community, and is forbid to see her love. In her own niche, Mina is considered too dark-skinned to be a desirable wife. It is explained by her mother that (if you want to catch a husband, you can be dark and rich, or light and poor, but not dark and poor.) Demetrius is the owner of his own carpet cleaning business and he runs into the same issue with his family. He is the carpet cleaner for the Indian motel.
