Business Ethics
Hi, my name is Rusty and I you would not believe what I am going through at my new job. I just began work here at the Orlando International Airport as a security guard; it?s not bad considering I have been out of work for three months. I am married with two children, and let me tell you?they are a handful. Well, as I was saying, you would not believe what is going on at work; our passenger screening equipment has not been working properly. Obviously, this is not good; so I decided to tell my supervisor about the problem and he explained to me that I just need to forget about it and to get back to work. Apparently he had already told his boss, the head of airport security, who told him the same thing. My boss made it apparent that if I spoke up about the matter, I would most likely lose my job and be blacklisted from similar jobs with other security companies.Lately, I have been losing a lot of sleep and I am not sure what to do with the situation at work. I know what I should do, but sometimes it is hard to make the right decision when the consequences are so harsh. However, as the 1 year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy approaches I cannot stop thinking about all of the innocent lives that were lost.
If it was always easy to make the right decision, there would never be a wrong one. This is because I believe in The Golden Rule and believe is the most important value in this case; if I were the traveler and you were the worker I hope that you would speak up and keep my life out of harms way. Many people will be affected by my decision; these people are the stakeholders. I cannot afford to lose my job; but if other people?s lives are at stake, I will have to make that sacrifice. I could have tried to go to the head of airport security; this would have run the risk of getting myself fired, which would have in return hurt my family life. There are always many choices you can make for every dilemma, but the one that is right will come from the heart. I honestly feel that if I were to lose my job over this it would be ten times better than giving terrorists the ability to kill innocent people all over again. Should anyone happen to lose their job or should tourism to the City of Orlando be effected, it is all for the safety of our nation. I fear that if I do not speak up and do something I could be responsible for the loss of even more lives. First, I decided to do some research to see if I would possibly be protected by the government if I were to speak up. With every decision I make I try to make it with the influence of the Golden Rule; and if I do that, I rarely, if ever make a bad decision. Fortunately, I believe one life is worth every single penny my decision will cost myself and everyone else?you cannot put a price on a human life. This decision is obviously not an easy one because of the plethora of people it is going to effect. This is how I have prioritized what I think is important considering all of the facts I have to work with. In order to make the right decision I must prioritize the facts to decide who gets top priority.
