College Misconceptions

After graduating from high school the next step in life for many students is to attend college. Being a freshmen in college this year I was told about many stereotypes and I was given false information about how college life really is. With the given information and stereotypes I received, I already had my own view point about college before I even left for school. The wrong image of college can lead to a very rude awakening the first couple of weeks. The adjustment from high school to college can be very significant if you are not prepared. Some ideas that you create about college could actually impede on your success during the first semester. A typical high school day is filled with trivial responsibilities that a majority of college students could almost sleep through. You wake up in the morning if you feel like it, and decide that you better get to school for another important day of learning. Upon arriving at school a couple minutes late you get slapped on the hand and told if you are late one more time you will get detention. After sleeping through your first hour class the bells ring and you walk out into the hallways and complain with all your friends how bad school really sucks. When lunch time rolls around

Instead of just realizing this fact, why not prepare us better in high school for the college experience. For me, my senior year in high school was a joke. When lunch is over you head to the second half of your day. Not bad for only studying 5 minutes right before the test was given out. These feelings are very common among freshman college students, but can positively motivate them to try harder in their studies. A feeling that maybe you are not as smart as you once thought you were. Coming to college with this knowledge and understanding could greatly benefit freshman college student during their first semester. After the test in graded you find out you received and A-. You continue this daily routine for the rest of the quarter and when you get your report card you astonishingly look down to read nothing but A's or B's. As you get to class the exam is handed out and you look down at the first question to a feeling of stupidity. Coming from a high school where I didn't have to work to get A's, going to college where I study for five to six hours a night and I am receiving C's is a major change. After deciding that you should maybe get the assignment done sometime you remember that you and your friends have plans tonight so the assignment is going to have to wait until another day. A typical college day is filled with numerous significant responsibilities that are vital for your success. All of a sudden there is a feeling that you don't belong any more. Of course, this is not the case for everybody in college but can be related to by most college students.
